st. ignace
St. Ignace, Michigan, is a vibrant city nestled on the northern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, right on the shores of Lake Huron. Established in 1671, it’s the second oldest city in Michigan and serves as the gateway to the Upper Peninsula, connected to the Lower Peninsula by the iconic Mackinac Bridge.
St. Ignace is named after the French Jesuit missionary St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus. The city’s origins trace back to the mission established by Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary who came to the area to minister to the native Ojibwe people. Today, the city’s rich history is preserved in the Museum of Ojibwa Culture, which provides an exploration into the life of the local Anishinaabe people and the region’s early European explorers. The historic mission church and Father Marquette’s burial place are also notable landmarks.
One of the most remarkable features of St. Ignace is the Mackinac Bridge, often referred to as “Mighty Mac.” Completed in 1957, this 5-mile suspension bridge links Michigan’s two peninsulas and stands as one of the world’s longest suspension bridges. The bridge itself is a marvel to behold, and the nearby Bridge View Park provides an excellent vantage point.
Another significant attraction in the city is the Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry. This ferry service carries passengers to and from Mackinac Island, a popular tourist destination renowned for its historical buildings, horse-drawn carriages, and the famous Grand Hotel.
The outdoors is a major draw in St. Ignace. The city is a jumping-off point for adventures in the Upper Peninsula, with access to abundant trails, wildlife, and waterways. The North Country Trail, the longest in the U.S., passes through here, offering excellent hiking, while the surrounding waters are popular for boating and fishing.
St. Ignace hosts several events throughout the year. One of the largest is the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day, where participants can walk the entire length of the bridge. The city also hosts car shows, a winter ice golf scramble, and a Fish Feast which features locally-caught whitefish.
