Ontonagon, Rousseau, and Bergland are three unique communities located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, each offering its distinct history, natural beauty, and interesting attractions.
Ontonagon, the largest and oldest of the three, is situated on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Established in 1843 during the copper rush, Ontonagon’s heritage is closely tied to mining. The Ontonagon Lighthouse, built in 1866, stands as a testament to the town’s maritime history. It is one of the oldest of its kind on Lake Superior and is open for guided tours.
Today, Ontonagon is known as the gateway to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, home to vast forests, rivers, waterfalls, and the majestic Lake of the Clouds. It offers opportunities for hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, and in winter, excellent downhill and cross-country skiing.
Rousseau, a small community south of Ontonagon, was also founded during the copper mining boom. Today, it is a peaceful community offering a quiet escape in the surrounding wilderness. It’s an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the surrounding Ottawa National Forest, with its trails, rivers, and wildlife.
Bergland, to the west, sits on the shore of Lake Gogebic, the largest natural inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. It was founded in the late 19th century and quickly became a hub for the logging industry. The lake is a haven for water-based recreation, including fishing, boating, and swimming in the summer, while the surrounding forests provide trails for hiking and mountain biking.
In winter, Bergland transforms into a snowmobile hotspot, with numerous trails radiating out from the town. The Lake Gogebic area is known for its reliable snowfall, making it a favorite destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
The Bergland Bay Bar is a notable local hangout, known for its “Christmas in July” celebration, where locals and visitors deck the bar with Christmas decorations and celebrate in holiday spirit, bringing unique cheer to the summer season.
