MANISTIQUE
Manistique, Michigan, is a city nestled in the south-central part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, Manistique has a rich history, scenic beauty, and a variety of attractions that appeal to both residents and visitors.
Founded in 1860 as a lumber town, Manistique quickly grew due to its strategic location on the Manistique River and Lake Michigan, making it an ideal transportation hub for lumber. Today, the city’s history is preserved in the Schoolcraft County Historical Park, which houses the historical Water Tower, a distinctive limestone structure built in 1922 that has since been designated a Michigan State Historic Site.
One of Manistique’s most prominent landmarks is the Manistique Lighthouse, also known as the East Breakwater Light. This historic lighthouse, built in 1916, marks the entrance to the harbor and is a popular destination for photographers and sightseers. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, visitors can stroll along the boardwalk and pier for a closer view and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Michigan.
Another notable attraction is the Manistique Boardwalk, a nearly two-mile trail that offers panoramic views of Lake Michigan. The boardwalk takes visitors past the lighthouse, wetland areas, and a beautiful sand beach. It’s an excellent spot for a leisurely walk, jog, or bird watching.
Kitch-iti-Kipi, also known as The Big Spring, is another must-see attraction located in the nearby Palms Book State Park. It’s Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, spanning 200 feet across, with crystal-clear waters that offer an incredible view of underwater features and fish. Visitors can use a self-operated observation raft to get a closer look at this natural wonder.
For those interested in native culture, the Bishop Baraga Mission site, located a few miles north of Manistique, provides historical insight. The mission marks the spot where Reverend Frederic Baraga, known as the Snowshoe Priest, established his first mission in the area in 1832.
Manistique also hosts several community events throughout the year. The Folkfest is an annual summer street festival featuring music, crafts, and food, and the Manistique Ice Fishing Derby is a favorite winter event drawing anglers from across the region.
