Houghton/hancock & more
Houghton, Hancock, and Lake Linden are three historic towns nestled in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The area, known for its rich copper mining history and natural beauty, offers a range of interesting sites and attractions for visitors to explore.
Houghton, the largest of the three towns, was established in 1852 and serves as the county seat of Houghton County. The town was named after Douglass Houghton, a geologist who confirmed the presence of copper deposits in the region. Houghton quickly became a hub for the copper mining industry, which attracted a diverse array of immigrants, particularly Finns, who left their mark on the region’s culture.
Today, Houghton is home to Michigan Technological University, a leading institution in the fields of engineering, forestry, and environmental sciences. The university adds a youthful vibrancy to the town and hosts numerous cultural and sporting events throughout the year. The town’s rich history is showcased in attractions such as the Carnegie Museum, which features exhibits on the area’s mining, logging, and transportation past.
Just across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, which connects Houghton to its sister city, lies the historic town of Hancock. Founded in 1859, Hancock was also shaped by the copper mining industry, with numerous mining companies establishing their headquarters in the town. Hancock’s rich history is evident in its architecture, which features many Victorian-era homes and buildings, including the stunning Quincy Mining Company Historic District.
One of the most popular attractions in Hancock is the Finnish American Heritage Center, which preserves and promotes the unique Finnish heritage of the area. The center features exhibits on Finnish-American history, culture, and art, as well as a library and archives.
Situated to the east of Houghton and Hancock is the charming village of Lake Linden, established in 1851. The town was named after the nearby Linden tree-lined lake and also thrived during the copper boom. The area’s history is preserved at the Houghton County Historical Museum, which offers exhibits on mining, logging, and the local Native American culture. The museum is housed in the former Lake Linden & Torch Lake Railroad depot, which adds to the historical ambiance.
All three towns offer ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, thanks to their location amidst the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. The area boasts numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as waterfront parks and beaches along the shores of Lake Superior and inland lakes. In the winter months, the region transforms into a snow sports paradise, with skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling opportunities aplenty.
In summary, Houghton, Hancock, and Lake Linden are three historic towns in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that boast a rich copper mining history and stunning natural surroundings. Visitors can explore the region’s past through fascinating museums, immerse themselves in local culture at the Finnish American Heritage Center, and enjoy a wealth of outdoor recreational activities in the breathtaking Keweenaw Peninsula landscape.
