SUMMARY:Dead Man Walking: A San Francisco Opera Primer with Carol Christ and Naniette Coleman
DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Opera’s fall season brings four powerful works to the stage — Rigoletto\, Dead Man Walking\, Parsifal\, and The Monkey King — each grappling with timeless questions of good and evil\, innocence and retribution\, punishment and salvation.\nJoin Carol Christ and Naniette Coleman for OLLI at UC Berkeley’s San Francisco Opera Primer\, standalone events that delve into the heart of each of these operas — the stories they tell\, the truths they wrestle with\, and the unforgettable characters whose choices shape their destinies. \nAbout the Faculty \nCarol Christ began her term as the 11th chancellor of UC Berkeley in 2017 and retired as Chancellor Emerita in 2024. Prior to that\, she served as president of Smith College. She is a celebrated scholar of 19th-century British literature\, a champion of women’s issues and diversity on college campuses\, and a lifelong opera lover. \nNaniette H. Coleman is a PhD candidate in Berkeley’s Sociology Department and studies culture and organizations. She is also a member of the San Francisco Opera’s Board of Trustees and the founder and Executive Director of UC Berkeley’s national award-winning Night Out/Night Off for Graduate Students arts initiative. \n— \nThe event will be held in person and via livestream. It will also be recorded.

SUMMARY:Mr Bike & Ski - Tuesday Road Ride - Escanaba
DESCRIPTION:This is an unofficial Mr. Bike and Ski group ride\, meaning there isn’t always a shop crew member in the pack. Riders should be comfortable with group dynamics\, pacing\, and route navigation.\nAll groups require a road bike—if you’re unsure what that means\, you probably don’t have one! Road bikes are built for speed and efficiency on pavement\, designed to take you as far and as fast as your legs can push. Curious about road cycling? Swing by the shop—we’re happy to help get you rolling.\nRide Season:These rides roll out as soon as the weather allows\, so keep an eye out for early-season meetups. Plan on riding every Tuesday from the week after Memorial Day through Labor Day.\nPro Tip:Got pre-ride jitters? Channel that energy into your legs and send it! Show up early\, introduce yourself\, and chat with the group about your riding experience. They’ll help you find the right pack. Not sure where you fit? Ask! Or\, if you’re feeling strong\, jump in\, hammer the pedals\, and drop some watts.\n22-Mile C Group – M35/Hyde Cut Across RouteThe C Group is ideal for newer riders looking to build endurance and confidence in a group setting. Expect a 15 mph average over 22 miles. Be ready to roll at 6:00 PM—arrive early to check your gear and meet the crew. A helmet and road bike are required.\n30-Mile B Group – M35+ RouteThe B Group is for intermediate riders looking for a solid\, steady ride. Expect a 15-19 mph average over 30 miles. This group focuses on smooth pacing and efficient drafting. Arrive at 6:00 PM to meet the group and check your setup. A helmet and road bike are required.\n40+ Mile A Group – Advanced RideThe A Group is for experienced riders who thrive on high-speed\, long-distance efforts. Expect a 20+ mph pace over 40+ miles. Routes vary weekly\, and the ride is often a drop ride—come prepared to hold the pace and work with the pack. A helmet and road bike are required
