Escanaba/
GLADSTONE
Escanaba and Gladstone are two charming cities nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Situated in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, these communities have a rich history and an array of interesting sites and attractions.Escanaba, the larger of the two cities, was founded in 1863 and serves as the county seat of Delta County. The name “Escanaba” is derived from the Ojibwa word “Eshkonabang,” which translates to “land of the red buck.” The area was first inhabited by the Ojibwa tribe, who traded with French fur trappers in the early 17th century. In the mid-19th century, the discovery of iron ore deposits and the arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway prompted rapid growth in the area. The city quickly became a prominent shipping and railroad hub for transporting iron ore, timber, and other natural resources.
Escanaba’s history is evident in its historical sites, such as the Sand Point Lighthouse, built in 1868 to guide ships through the Little Bay de Noc. The lighthouse now serves as a museum and offers panoramic views of the bay. Another notable attraction is the Delta County Historical Society Museum, which features exhibits on the region’s lumbering, railroading, and maritime history.
Adjacent to Escanaba is the city of Gladstone, founded in 1887 and named after British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Also situated along Little Bay de Noc, Gladstone’s history is closely linked to the lumber and railroad industries. The city became known as the “Lumberjack Capital of the World” due to its numerous sawmills and lumber yards, which produced millions of board feet of lumber during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Today, Gladstone is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with its picturesque waterfront parks, sandy beaches, and abundant recreational opportunities. Van Cleve Park, a popular destination for both locals and visitors, features a beautiful harbor, a sandy beach, and a playground. The park also hosts various events, including the annual Gladstone Independence Day Celebration.Another significant attraction in Gladstone is the Gladstone Area Historical Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the city’s logging and railroad past. The museum is housed in a Victorian-era home built by a prominent lumber baron, providing visitors with a glimpse into the lifestyles of the city’s early inhabitants.
Both Escanaba and Gladstone offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, hiking, and golfing. The area is also renowned for its spectacular ice-fishing opportunities during the winter months, drawing anglers from around the region to try their luck on the frozen waters of the bay.
