NEWBERRY
Newberry, Michigan, often referred to as the “Moose Capital of Michigan,” is a charming town located in the eastern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Known for its rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and unique attractions, Newberry offers a range of experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Founded in 1882, Newberry’s early growth was largely driven by the timber industry. The town’s history is well documented at the Luce County Historical Museum, located in the historic 1894 sheriff’s residence. The museum offers exhibits on the logging era, the early days of Newberry, and local culture.
Newberry is often called the gateway to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, home to one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The park offers miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and in winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. A particular highlight is the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub, a unique spot where visitors can sample locally brewed beer after exploring the park.
Another key attraction is the Oswald’s Bear Ranch, the largest bear-only ranch in the United States. This unique refuge for rescued and orphaned bears is a favorite destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can learn about bear behavior and conservation efforts while observing these magnificent creatures in a natural habitat setting.
Newberry’s location also provides easy access to a wealth of outdoor activities year-round. From fishing and boating in the summer to snowmobiling and dog sledding in winter, there’s no shortage of recreational opportunities. The town is surrounded by vast forests, providing excellent spots for hunting, bird watching, and mushroom picking.
The town is also known for its annual events that draw visitors from across the region. The Lumberjack Breakfast and Country/Polka Music Festival is a popular summer event that includes hearty meals, lively music, and dancing. In the winter, the Michigan Dog Sled Races are a thrilling spectacle that showcases the region’s rich tradition of dog sledding.
