CEDAR RIVER
Stephenson, Daggett, and Cedar River are three neighboring communities located in Menominee County, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Each of these small towns holds its own unique history and charm, offering residents and visitors a taste of the region’s rich past and natural beauty.
Stephenson, the largest of the three, was established in the late 19th century during the logging boom. This period of prosperity is reflected in the grand old homes and historic buildings that line the town’s streets. The town was named after Samuel S. Stephenson, a lumber baron, banker, and politician who was a significant figure in the region.
One key attraction in Stephenson is the Menominee County Historical Museum. Housed in an old Victorian mansion, the museum features a variety of exhibits on local history, from logging and farming artifacts to antique furnishings and historic photographs.
Daggett, a few miles east of Stephenson, was also founded during the logging boom and was named after a local timber producer. Today, it’s a quiet, picturesque community surrounded by scenic countryside. Daggett holds an annual Fourth of July celebration which includes a parade, games, food, and fireworks, drawing visitors from the surrounding area.
Cedar River, located along the shores of the Green Bay of Lake Michigan, was established as a shipping point for iron ore and lumber in the 19th century. The town’s harbor and beautiful beach make it a popular spot for boating, swimming, and fishing. The Cedar River State Harbor provides modern boating facilities, and the nearby J.W. Wells State Park offers camping, hiking, and a beautiful sandy beach.
Each of these communities is surrounded by vast forests, providing abundant opportunities for hunting, birdwatching, and nature walks. The Cedar River is known for its excellent fishing, particularly for smallmouth bass and walleye. The nearby Escanaba River State Forest and the Shakey Lakes Oak-Pine Forest are both excellent locations for wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation.
