CRYSTAL FALLS
Crystal Falls, Michigan, is a charming city situated in the western part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in Iron County. Renowned for its rich history, scenic beauty, and unique attractions, Crystal Falls offers a wide range of experiences for both residents and visitors alike.
Established in 1881 during the region’s iron mining boom, Crystal Falls was named after a nearby waterfall on the Paint River. The city quickly flourished, becoming a hub for mining, logging, and transportation. The Harbor House, an elaborate Queen Anne-style home built by a local lumber baron in 1890, stands as a testament to the city’s prosperous past. Today, the Harbor House is a well-preserved museum open for guided tours.
The Iron County Historical Museum, located in the former county courthouse, provides a comprehensive look into the area’s history, showcasing exhibits on the local mining and logging industries, Native American heritage, and the lifestyle of early settlers. The museum building itself is a historical landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in Crystal Falls. The Paint River, which flows through the city, is a popular destination for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The nearby Bewabic State Park offers hiking trails, a sandy beach, and a beautiful forested campground.
One of Crystal Falls’ most fascinating natural attractions is the Iron Mine, one of the oldest, largest, and deepest iron mines in the U.S., where visitors can take a guided tour 400 feet underground to learn about the region’s mining history.
Crystal Falls is also home to the Humongous Fungus Fest, an annual event that celebrates a colony of Armillaria gallica, a type of honey fungus, which is one of the world’s largest and oldest living organisms, spread across more than 37 acres in nearby forest.
Another unique aspect of Crystal Falls is its strong commitment to the arts. The city is home to the Crystal Theatre, also known as the “Gem of the North,” a beautifully restored 1927 theater that hosts a variety of concerts, films, and community events throughout the year.
